    Hi everyone,

I'm new to all this and it was recommended to me by my PT. I'm a recent double amputee (legs) and am in a wheelchair. The accident caused spinal bruising and it looks like for the most part I'll be in a wheelchair for the better part of the time. I'm interested in meeting with people in my situation, amputee or wheelchair, but also to meet people in general. I am single, 26, so I'd like to meet some women on here too, if that's allowed :)

I think you can email me through here or my email is mlorty19@yahoo.com.

I really look forward to meeting everyone.

Hi Jake, Welcome to Disaboom. I am para with MS, but I'm an old lady. I'm glad you have joined us and I'm sure you'll meet some very nice people here. I'm looking forward to getting to know you!

    Hey Jake,

Again, I'm sorry to hear about your amputation. I am a right BKA of 4-1/2 years. The best thing you can do is find a good prosthetist, someone you're comfortable with. Also, if you don't like what they're doing or don't like the prosthesis, then tell them. The best thing you can do for yourself is be your own best patient advocate. You gotta speak up for yourself.

    Send me a message!

    Take care,

    Becky

    Hi Jake,

You are clearly adorable so I don't believe you will have any problem making friends. Just so you know my father in law is an amputee and has been for over thirty years. He has raised two sons, been married to the same woman all these years, he recently retired as the international representative of local union 66, and enjoys golfing in his retirement. Nothing has kept him from his aspirations, especially not a permanent disibility. Don't mourn what can't be changed, you have a long life ahead of you. Live it with fervor.

Hi Jake! Welcome to Disaboom-I'm Kara. I also use a wheelchair because I was born with Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI)-it's a bone condition that makes my bones more fragile than most. I think your PT was exactly right-this should be a great place for you to meet some friends and start learning about the disability community that you've joined.

Relationships are definitely not impossible once you have a disability. We have all sorts here-dating, single and looking, single and not looking (lol!), and married. I'm a newlywed-just got married six months ago.

I wondered if you might like to check out my latest blog. It's about Rudy Garcia-Tolson. He's also a double leg amp. We were both on the US Paralympic Swim team together in 2004 and I wrote about his latest adventures last night. Check it out.

I hope you stick around and let us get to know you better. Pop in some of the other threads, post some pictures in the gallery, and/or even add a blog! If you need anything, we're just a question away.

Welcome to Disaboom, Jake.  I'm Valerie and I have sons your age group.   I have fibromyalgia among a few other things.  My husband has had 3 amputations.  He has adjusted.  I have been his caregiver during his recouperations from his surgeries.

From reading the thread, I think you've got some good suggestions already.  Don't be shy about jumping in to the discussions on the threads.....I hope you let other people have the opportunity to get to know you.
