I was wondering if anyone else shop at Dollar General stores?  My car has been down and that is the only store in town I could get food for a while so I was going there all the time.  But the isles in the store always has the displays in the way to make the isles too narrow, my wheelchair is 31" at the bottom of the handrims (widest part with the camber) and I could not go down the isles!  I talked to the people working there and they said they were not allowed to move anything, they have to follow the plans that they get from the home office as to where stuff goes!  So I decided to call the Home Office.  They gave me a run around and I am suppose to be getting a call back, but I asked them if all the stores are the same and they told me they should be...

So what I ws thinking was if other people from other areas also checked their local stores and called about the things that are wrong that we could get the company to change all their stores.  If we all worked together and called in across the nation we could get everywhere accessable!

Here is the Dollar General Coorperate information:

    Corporate Office

    100 Mission Ridge

    Goodlettsville, TN 37072

I called about store #7284.  With $9.5 billion in sales in fiscal 2007 from 8,000+ stores in 35 states and 71,500 employees they need to be following all the ADA Regulations.

If someone else has a store they want to get changed I will visit my local one and help out as much as I can even if I do not visit it much.  Post up so we all can help make this a better place.  I might not live in your town that you want to change but I will probably pass through there one day or someone else who need the room will.  Thanks

Did you check what the local/state and federal code says about the width of the isles and the clearence?   At 31 inches of camber, you might be beyond the distance what code calls for.  I believe in Massachusetts it's 36 inches of clearence.  I could be wrong on that.    I have camber on my chair and there have been times when an isle display has blocked my way.  I've been know to just push them aside.  Didn't make any friends with the employees, but what are ya going to do?

Hey Ark! We don't have Dollar General stores up here in my neck of the woods. I can certainly understand your frustration. I had problems with JC Penney when I was in a chair. They blocked the entrance to the dressing room with hanger carts, so I couldn't even go in. Their solution was to suggest I make an appointment, come in early and a sales associate will help me shop. I haven't spent a dime there since and never will.

They can't block the aisles like that. I'll have a look at their website and see what I can do. Good luck to you!

Well, Dollar General and JC Penny's just got crossed off my list! No  I live in the sticks, so  there aren't many stores here. I think we may have a dollar store, but I'm not sure it's Dollar Gen. I wonder if a well crafted letter to the editor of your local news paper would help. We have a local Belk's Department store and I cannot shop there because the cloths racks are too close together. People are downright rude about this kind of stuff! I go to the Peoble's down the road and they treat me like a queen when I shop there! Guess who gets my money???

The ADA is every state, you can make state and local laws that exceed them but you can not be under what federal laws are set at which is 36".  Attitude has a lot to do with it also, if they would have tried or at least done something besides tell me tough luck it might be different.  Here is a couple websites:

    http://www.adacompliancereview.com/common.htm

    http://www.access-board.gov/adaag/html/adaag.htm

I have not noticed a problem with JC Pennies here, but I do not go there much.  Dillards on the other hand pissed me off with their rolling isle shoe racks, they told me that they are not actual isles so it is not an ADA violation.  I did get mad at the store but beside complaining to the managers there I did not press the issue like I should have done.

Anybody tried making it through the clothing racks at Wal-Mart ?.......you'd think someone would notice that it's near to impossible to negotiate a wheelchair..........much less their very own power carts through those crowded and narrow spaces.........the spacing looks arbitrary to me......no guidelines whatsoever !.........Just an observation.................in the " store of stores "........peace and love........Norma
