Travel

Almost everybody likes to travel. The question is, what's the best strategy and what locations are most accessible?

I am a quadriplegic and am flying to Australia with my girlfriend.  It will be almost a 15 hour long flight.  I do plan on wearing TED hose of course.  But my main question is how to discretely empty my leg bag?  I'm sure there are other questions that I don't even know to ask.  If anyone has any info they could pass on to me about their travel experience on a long airplane flight I would appreciate it.  I am also worried about them taking apart my manual wheelchair.  Does anyone make a travel container for wheelchairs?

Just take a 32 oz. paper cup with a plastic lid out of the trash before getting on the plane and have your girlfriend empty your leg bag and dump it in the rest room.  Piece-of-cake.  Also, try to limit your fluid intake before and during the flight.

Hi Dennis.......welcome to disaboom. How neat......going to Australia ! I'm afraid I've only gone as far as Ohio of late.....to see my daughter. I'm a para and had a friend who did exactly that........discretely emptied my leg bag and took it to the restroom. Worked like a charm ! I'm afraid I don't know about travel containers for wheelchairs.......it's a great idea though. I have heard of some not so great stories of how an intact wheelchair arrived at it's destination { not so intact }. A container sounds smart !.....Just wanted to say hi.....and welcome.......and have a wonderful time in Australia. Please tell us all about it when you get back !............peace and love........Norma

Hi Dennis: If yours is a manual wheelchair, or even if it is a power chair, they should be able to load it, stow it and unload it without disconnecting/disassembling ANYTHING.  I've worked in the airline industry for 40+ years and if you have a non-spillable battery (they all are anymore) you should have no problem.  Make sure you check your chair out carefully when it is brought to you in both directions!  If I can answer any more questions on flying with a wheelchair, send me a private message. Good luck!
