Each king in a deck of playing cards represent a great king from history:

    Spades~King David

    Clubs~Alexander the Great

    Hearts~Charlemagne

    Diamonds~Julius Caesar

Do you know a story of any of the other cards that are in a deck?

    Sandy

I heard a song once that dealt with the symbolism of a deck of cards. At the moment I don`t recall the title. That song told a little story about a soldier who had been looking at a deck of cards. The man`s officer objected to his playing cards on a Sunday. The soldier replied that each card had some religious symbolism attatched to it.It might have been Tom McCall who sang it, but the tiltle isn`t  coming to me.                                        ollie

I know the song that you are talking about and it is called Deck of Cards. I don't know who sang it the first time. My dad use to sing in when he was play guitar. It is a beautiful way to look at each card. Thanks for remembering it. It brought back memories.

    Thanks again, Sandy

Sandy, that`s a beautiful story hou shared with us about your dad playing the guitar and singing Deck of Cards.

Scipilot, thatnks for your input and providing the link.

My curiosity was aroused and I found a site people may want to check out.

    www.newtscards.com/history_biblestory.asp

According to that article, the idea of soldiers using a deck of cards as an aid to preayer and meditation can be traced back as far as 1788. It is sometimes called A Soldier`s Prayerbook and appeared in an 1865 book about the history of playing cards. French versions of the story were printed in 1788 and 1809.

The version we are most familiar with , the song Deck of cards was written by T "Texas" Tyler in 1948.The song was recorded by many artists, including Tex Ritter 1948, Wink Martindale in 1959 and Bill Anderson  in 1991.

The Ace reminds us there is one God.

The Deuce reminds us the Bible is divided into two parts, the Old and the New Testaments.

The Trey  reminds us of the Holy Trinity.

and so with the numbered cards.

The King reminds us there is but one King of Heaven, God Almighty.

The  Queen reminds us of Mary, the Blessed Virgin.

The Knave (Jack) reprsents the Devil.

The number of the spots in a deck of cards reminds us of the 365 days in a year.

There are 12 picture cards , the number of months in a year.

Many songs have a meaning beyond the obvious  words. For example the song The Twelve Days of Christmas is a popular Christmas Carol. But it is reputed to contain a deeper religious meaning than the mere words would suggest.                     ollie
