Coal, a bulldog, survived cancer and the amputation of his left front paw, only to face euthanasia because his remaining legs couldn't support his burly body. Owner Reg Walker wasn't having any of that: He shelled out 10,000 British pounds, or around $18,200 USD, to have Coal fitted with a next-generation prosthesis made of a titanium alloy first tested on survivors of the London 7/7 bombings. As you can see in this video, things are working out marvelously for Coal!
The sophisticated alloy mimics animal skin, allowing skin and bone to seal the metal implant. An umbrella of the dog's skin grows down and attaches to the metal. The type of implant used for Coal's new leg is the only available implant into which skin and bone will naturally grow.
Coal, and his owner, couldn't be happier with the results. Coal has, according to Walker, "An absolutely normal quality of life."
