Mike Harn was at the Mother's Against Drunk Driving booth at the Western Idaho Fair on August 19th when he was approached by a fair employee about his disabled wife, Rose. Reportedly the woman asked Harn to take Rose and leave because there had been a lot of phone calls about Rose's appearance being offensive and too graphic.

Mike Harn leans over to kiss his wife, Rose.

Rose Harn was hit by a 16 year old drunk driver over twenty years ago. The teenager ran a stop sign and rammed Rose's car, leaving the 58 year old mother of three in a coma for 18 months with her brain stem almost cut in two. A paraplegic with severe brain damage, Rose has been cared for by her husband Mike ever since. Mike and Rose have become fixtures for their local MADD chapter, regularly making appearances at classes for convicted drunk drivers and at MADD events.

August 19th was different. At MADD's request, Mike brought Rose to their booth at the state fair so that people could see what  the consequences could be for driving drunk. Those consequences were too much for some people to stomach. Mike initially refused to leave, but the next day, Miren Aburusa, executive director of MADD Idaho, dropped the Harns from their list of volunteers.

"The comments that people were making about Rose, I think were horrible.'" Aburusa said. But she dismissed the couple because of concerns that the local sherrif would turn up to enforce the eviction request.

The Harns have filed a discrimination complaint with the Idaho Human Rights Commission and have refused to work with MADD in the future.

There are so many things wrong here on different levels. Mike should have showed up the next day anyway. How could anyone be "evicted" becasue of how they looked? And MADD's reason for dropping them from volunteers had no merit what so ever. I supported MADD for years, no more. The mental anguish this must have caused Mr. Ham and his family. What is wrong with people? Common sense, good grief it is called reality people. I for one plan on complaining to the Fair Organizers as well as to the National Office of MADD. Clark

Hey naomimimi, How aboot providing a stock letter of complaint for both orginazations as well as State and posting them with person to contact. That would make it easy for everyone to e-mail their complaints/outrage about this. Clark

I, too, would like to get some additional contact information about this. If not, I'd be too happy to look it up myself because this is disgusting in the extreme.

More Americans like Rose should have this courage. Very inspiring to see courage.

While I do not know these people, I live in Boise, Idaho (site of the Western Idaho Fair). I have been to the fair twice since I moved here 5 years ago (one of those times was this year, but not on the day mentioned). Both times I went with my husband, who is both physically and visually challenged, as well as with others who are visually impaired. So, My husband is there in an electric wheelchair and is using a white cane. We have never been kicked out (which is a good thing because both my husband and I would put up a fight!). Both times we were there we saw a number of others with disabilities, none of them were kicked out. The disabled parking section is always full very early, there are that many people w/ disabilities. This is the first I have heard about this, but then again, I don't read the newspaper or watch TV news a whole lot, and am not in a position where I can keep up on all the current disability issues here in Idaho. On the subject of drunk drivers, one of our greatest friends was paralyzed by one, and that is also part of what eventually killed him. People need to see what the human costs of drunk drving are. If they can't handle it, they can go to another part of the fair park! This couple was treated grossly unfairly! I will be happy to look up local contact #'s if I can, just let me know :) (but I am going to be very busy the next two weeks, so forgive me if it take me a while to get them to you :))

Here's the link to what the MADD people have to say about the incident: http://www.madd.org/chapter/1600_12381. I think complaining to the national HQ might be the way to go. Here's the link to their contact form: http://www.madd.org/About-Us/About-Us/Contact-Us.aspx. That's where I sent my complaint. If you follow the hyperlinks that naomimimi included in her blog, you'll see that the Idaho MADD executive director actually sent a letter of apology to county officials for any offense they may have felt at having to actually look at a victim of drunk driving! Here's the quote from the AP story: "Aburusa also e-mailed county officials an apology 'for the problems and inconvenience our booth has caused you.'" It would be nice to somehow get her email address and send her our comments (with the article?). Just to ease her pain a bit (wow, the nerve!) by letting her know her message and courage are not lost. Sometimes MADD goes a bit overboard in their lobbying, but this is one of the best messages they can send. Rather than offend, it should resound within them and make a connection words can not tell. My thoughts are with her and her family.

Mike, Your wife has just as much right to be there as anyone else. As cruel as it is this is still America! I am only partially diabled, after 3 strokes. Your wife and yourself have a lot of courage. It sickens me to see storys like this.
