Alaskan Governor Sarah Palin, husband Todd Palin, and their newborn baby boy, Trig, who has Down's Syndrome.Could John McCain's running mate be the mother of a baby with Down's Syndrome? Disability rights reporter Nat Hentoff thinks so, and he's not alone. Many political commentators are suggesting Sarah Palin as a potential Vice Presidential candidate.

The 44-year-old Governor of Alaska, known for motorcycle riding and referring to her husband as the "first dude," gave birth to Trig Paxson Van Palin on April 18, 2008. The baby boy is Palin's fifth child, and was diagnosed prenatally with Down's Syndrome. When the first dude, Todd Palin, got the news of the diagnosis, he reportedly told Governor Palin: "We shouldn't be asking, 'Why us?' We should be saying, 'Well, why not us?'"

According to the blog Draft Sarah Palin for Vice President, Governor Palin is "A (sic) energetic, young, fresh face who will energize the electorate." The blog cites her pro-life and pro-gun stances as advantageous to a McCain candidacy, and says Governor Palin as Vice President would "Put to rest the idea that America only elects white males."

What do you think? Is the American electorate ready for a Vice President with a developmentally disabled baby? Would Palin's strong opposition to abortion and her choice to have Trig help Senator McCain win back support among right-wing Conservatives who have been put off by McCain's moderate stance on some issues? Would Palin's candidacy force the Democratic nominee to address the issue of selective abortion due to a prenatal diagnosis of Down's Syndrome? Leave a comment, or talk about it in Disaboom Discussions.

Wow! I've never heard of this politician and definitely not her disability connection-found this through Digg and hope others pass the word on there too. Here's the link: digg.com/.../Potential_VP_Candidate_has_baby_with_Down_s_Syndrome

I think the baby's condition should NOT be or become a factor in the mother's run. It would be wrong to use the baby's Down's Syndrome as some sort of pity trap to try to make voters feel either guilty or that they should reward the Gov. just because she has a DD child. The child is a person, unto himself, and not a vote-getting gimmick. I don't think the Gov. would do that, but the campaign engineers would, and so would the other groups that make ads to sway the vote. The Gov. is neither saintly nor heroic, she's on a par with any other mom who loves her kids. Let's not make a circus of this little fellow.

I find it astonishing that this woman is meant to appeal to the ultra-conservative Republican base. Clearly she is a firm pro-life believer--but why would you fight so strongly for the life of a child you have no intention of raising? Campaigning alone will take her so far away from her 4 month old; should she win, her duties as VP will allow her even LESS time with her children. I'll admit I don't have an inside track on what the conservative base thinks, but I would have to imagine that a segment that pushes hard core family values would have a hard time with a woman leaving her developmentally disabled 4 month old to be raised by...whom? I haven't heard any mention of her husband staying home with their 4 kids, who will be caring for them? Has the pro-life core become so focused on the anti-abortion stance that they no longer believe that a four-month old needs his parents? I'm very confused by this choice.

I feel that Sarah could be a great asset to our country, but I have to agree with Angi. How difficult will it be to have a newborn with potential medical problems and be vice president? I feel that no child of any young age should be exposed to the world of politics, whether democrat (Obamas 2 young daughters) or republican(Palin's younger children). Can you imagine what their lives will be like from here on?

A mother of 5 and she want to be VP? SHOULDN'T "family" come first? NO WAY NO PALIN! FAIMLY FIRST-not VP! shame, shame--WHO really is raising her kids???????

Apparently her husband is a stay at home dad. I don't see in that case how the situation would be any different from a man who has multiple children running for president. There's still a parent home with the kids full-time.

It's now being reported that the baby is actually that of her daughter. Not surprising. What power driven person wouldn't protect against such things. She won't be the VP nom for long once this breaks. http://stupidcelebrities.net/2008/08/30/bristol-palin-pregnancy-is-vp-sarah-palins-5th-child-really-her-daughters-photos/
