I finally did it.
For the last few years, I've been telling the hubby that I want a jet ski/waverunner. I started saving up a little bit of money here and there. All summer long, I've been looking at Craigslist and trying to find something that doesn't have a lot of hours on it.
I came close to buying one on three different occasions. My neighbor was selling one and I wanted to go for it. The hubby wasn't too sure. Let's talk about it over dinner, he said. No sooner did we make the decision to buy it and we saw someone drive off with it. I was really bummed out about that one, because the price was right and it looked like it was in immaculate condition even though it was a 1998 model.
The hubby felt bad about missing the opportunity to purchase the jet ski. "Why don't you look into a new one?" he suggested. I laughed.
This morning, I went over to talk with another neighbor to see if I could buy his jet ski lift. He had three of them sitting in the water and I knew that his son bought an old Kawasaki earlier in the summer. All three lifts were empty.
Turns out they've burned through three jet skis over the years. The one that they bought earlier this summer only lasted a few weeks.
So I thought and thought about it. I went to two different local mariners and took a look at the new models. I looked at the newer used models. What if the used model burns up after a short time, I thought to myself. Plus, the used models were priced pretty high.
I looked at all three popular brands. I kept coming back to the Sea Doo. One of the biggest selling points was a feature that has two different keys-- one that allows a full throttle up to 50-60 mph and another key that only allows it to go up to 35 mph. This was a great feature for my oldest kid, who would be able to take it out on his own next summer. This would allow me to regulate his driving speed.
I did some pricing, played with financing and wrangled a deal that I couldn't walk away from.
So even though my birthday isn't until next week, my birthday present is coming early. Tomorrow, I'm going to be skimming the lake on a Sea Doo GTI.
Wanna come along for the ride?
