Well, do you remember me telling you how pumped up I was for the US Nationals this Friday, June 6th in Denver? Everything was going perfectly; my diet, my training, my frame of mind was set, my bike was running great. I was stretching the tension of the spokes on my new racing wheels, when all of a sudden, it hit me! Or should I say "the van" hit me! BAM! A license plate went flying, carbon wheels shattered, spokes lay on the ground, the rear axle was 45 degrees off from its regular position. My left shoulder had scraped across the blacktop and the van's tire was atop my right rear wheel. After the initial shock of being struck, I saw I was in a vulnerable position, but pain hadn't set in. Seconds passed and I became fully conscious of what had just happened. Then the pain hit! My right thumb was numb so I checked to see if it was broken. I checked my forearm as well - no breaks. My right lung hurt so badly and it was hard to breathe. My head seemed to be okay, I didn't see much blood, and as I continued to move, to check my body, I felt severe pain in my left shoulder. I put my right hand on my shoulder and could feel my clavicle sticking up about half an inch. In that instant, my dreams of competing in China, crashed hard, like the van that had just ended them. The van had dragged me a few feet. Fortunately, the driver stopped and called 911. At the hospital, I learned that I had dislocated my clavicle and torn the ligaments connecting the clavicle to the shoulder joint. The pain was unbearable. They injected me with morphine. As it hit my system, I wasn't sure which was worse the accident or my body's reaction to the drug... So where do I stand in relationship to China? In the days that passed, after medical tests & consultations, I spoke to my coaches and delivered the news. They agreed to try to secure my spot on the team pending a medical release stating I would be able to train 100% in five to six weeks. I have trained for the past four years awaiting Beijing. There's no way I will let it slip away. I will be at Denver this weekend. I will compete in the time trial only. I'll give it my best shot. Stay tuned for the results!

wow, that is terrible!  I'm glad that nothing worse happened and hope that you can get the medical release and are able to get up to speed quickly.

Damn, sorry to hear that. I've had a similar accident except I was in my chair and it was a Caddy. Kick butt.

Yeah, I know the feeling. I've been hit by a van too, just glad I don't remember any of it. July 20' 1995, I was at a friends house, and we went accross highway 61 in Two Harbors, MN, and I guess it must've been busy. Well, we crossed, then we both were hit, a friend and myself. He had a compound fracture of his leg, because he turned back toward the block, and didn't get hit as badly as I did. I took the full impact of the van, going roughly 35 mph. I had two collapsed lungs, two bleeds on the brain, a bruise around my heart, and a very bad roadrash on my left leg, because I was dragged 59 feel underneath the van as a piece of clothing caught onto the bottom. Then it came to a halt, and I was left there on the highway, clinging to life. A woman working at the bakery who witnessed the incident rushed outside and flagged down traffic, also calling 911. I was rushed into intensive care, hokked up to tubes and what not. There was a 50-50 chance I would survive the night, which I obviously did. I was comatose for more than a week, and should have died that night. I had to learn how to talk again, how to function again, how to do a lot of things again, especially motor skills, which I failed miserably coming out of the coma. I then was transferred to a different intensive care unti, because it had a burn center, so that the nurses could scrub my leg that was skun up, because there was rocks and glass in it, so they had a towel that they would use to scrub for about twenty seconds a day. It was the most intense pain that I went through while concious. I would scream because it hurt so bad.But then they were able to perform surgery, and there was skin-grafting, Plus, the ventilator was taken out, so I could then breathe on my own, after a few days. I recovered quicker than normal somehow. I was supposed to be in a vegetative state, which is what the doctors thought would happen. But that's not the case. I recovered very well, and am glad to be alive and functioning like a normal human being today. That's my story, dude. But yeah, I understand where you're coming from: Getting stuck by a van really is the pits!
