I have been very hard-of-hearing since birth, having caught meningitis in the hospital when I was born.
My family thought I was just not paying attention because I was always on the move ;)
I learned to speech read by osmosis. That kept them fooled for a while longer, then I got "caught" at the age of ten, and for many years I wore my hearing aids in my pocket...
