For every movie that comes with action figures, there are always going to be collectors who snatch them up faster than free beer at a baseball game. Action figure collectors can be quite obsessive. And these collectors closely scrutinize the figurines, looking at every detail and it’s similarity to the character it’s supposed to be.

And the brand new Jake Sully wheelchair action figure from Mattel is getting more than bad reviews, it’s getting razzed. Jake Sully was the main character is the box-office hit, Avatar.

For starters, it looks nothing like Sam Worthington. His face looks like some generic brown-haired white dude. The detail they put into his face is definitely less than. And even worse, his clothes are in pristine condition. His jeans are cleans, his shirt tight and neat, it’s as if they didn’t think of the storyline at all while designing this figurine. Didn’t he have to be in suspended animation for 6 years while traveling to Pandora? Simply put, there were no details added to the wheelchair-version of Jake Sully that made it come alive. Sure the wheelchair was yellow, but even that didn’t look completely like his real chair from the movie.

And perhaps the most ironic/amusing detail of the wheelchair Jake Sully action figure is it’s ability to stand, including having moveable ankles, hips, and knees. Oh sweet irony indeed! I guess it might be too much to ask Mattel to create an action figure with fused ankles, knees, and hips, just so it’s more real re: Jake’s mobility level. They’re only selling it for $13.00 after all, not much in the collectable action figure world!

This figurine drama reminds me of the Wheelchair Barbie fiasco in the ‘90s, where people complained about it’s design saying it wasn’t authentic enough. What, a pink wheelchair with a purple frame isn’t realistic?
