It’s not everyday someone makes me blush, but Rafe Briggs, a psychologist, filmmaker, somatic educator, and btw - quadriplegic from a crazy fall in India while he was there doing research (a C5-6 quad to be exact) - is becoming a SEXUAL REVOLUTIONARY. Yes, a real effin’ sexual revolutionary. And I don’t just call anyone that.
So here’s what happened. I had him on my podcast awhile back, and he completely shocked me, no, blew me away, as to what he had to say about the sex he was having post-injury. He was talking about full body sexual energy, nerves rewiring themselves (his thumb began to feel like his penis), using the Tantric “Yab Yum” pose (where you wrap your legs around one another) to share a sexual energy trip-fest, and exploring new ways to experience erotic energy/pleasure in bed with deep breathing and meditation.
To discover what Rafe is looking to discover - how to best use erotic energy to heal - this obviously requires some pretty kinky/fun research, and he’s been having some super hot “sessions” with fellow sex educators to assist in his research, which again, his end goal is to find ways people with spinal cord injuries can still experience erotic energy despite any nervous system hindrances.
And what I loved about the interview was how open he was with it all, not embarrassed, not ashamed, which he shouldn’t be of course. But still, I’m sure there are tons of people out there who could never handle reading Rafe’s detailed blog, SexAbility, which talks about his research sessions in-detail, describing everything that goes down.
And I thought I was having some pretty awesome sex post-injury. Looks like Rafe could teach me a few things (or make a how-to video at least).
