Once again, British television is blowing American television away when it comes to featuring people with disabilities. The incredibly popular show, How to Look Good Naked hosted by cutie-patootie Gok Wan, has just premiered their newest latest season by featuring three women with disabilities in the first three episodes, How to Look Good Naked….with a Difference is what they’re calling this unique disability-spin on their show.
If you‘re not familiar with the show, it’s a lot like What Not to Wear except for one thing: To be on, you must get naked. Gok then undresses you and shows you how to buy the right lingerie and the kind of clothing for your body type (not easy when you‘re sitting down all day). In the first episode, Clare, a 44 year old mother with a single leg amputation is featured. In episode #2, Tracy, a 27 year old woman who uses a wheelchair (spine tumor) is featured. The third episode features a 58 year old woman who lost her vision when she was 28. Here's a great commentary on the first two episodes.
If you check-out the image above, you’ll see Tracy and not surprisingly, Gok put her in a bustier. As an adapted clothing guru myself, I too would’ve recommended a full bustier. They are phenomenal at hiding unseemly bellies, especially under clothing if you’re wanting to create a clean line. All of these episodes can be viewed for free if you live in the UK at the site’s official site. If you live outside the UK and want to take a look, try surfthechannel.com. I found several seasons on there.
And if you’re looking for more “how to look sexy from your wheelchair” advice, here’s some excellent advice the show procured from British disabled actress, Kelly-Marie Stewart:
What is your own personal style?
Shoes are the most important piece of my outfit. I never go out without heels. If you have killer heels your outlook will look great.
Where do you buy your clothes from; are they designer or high-street?
I'm very much a high street kind of girl. Although, when going on a night out I tend to design my own creations and have my outfits made by local dressmakers, as many Liverpool girls prefer to do.
How difficult is it looking stylish in a chair?
You need to always think 'does this outfit look good sitting down?' Material is also a big thing when choosing an outfit - if it creases when you hold it, steer clear as you will look like a bag of rags when you've been sitting down all day.
How did you adapt your style and clothes when you starting using the chair?
Ultimately, I always wear something I like no matter what. My daily style has not really changed. However, my evening style has, as I used to wear dresses quite a lot on nights out, whereas now I always opt for a classier, safer choice.
