All the cool kids are getting iPhones it seems, even wheelchair-users. I have quite a number of tech-savvy friends who use wheelchairs and they’re certifiably in love with their phones. It’s crazy. And all the while I’m feeling pretty silly with my pre-paid Nokia. But whatevs. I’m not threatened by their phones (really!).

And now these friends (powerchair-using friends to be exact) with iPhones can download an app (“application,” i.e, software for your phone) that’s specifically geared for the wheelchair-users of the world. This new app is set to debut by April 2010 and was developed by Dynamic Controls, a provider of high-tech controlers for wheelchairs and scooters.

The app will do a variety of things that wheelchair-users are sure to love, including displaying speed (mph and kph) and direction (built-in compass) real-time. It also has what they’re calling an “on-chair charger” (which I assume is the phone keeping you avail of the current charge on your chair’s batteries). It also has a “Chair Doctor,” which will inform the user of their chair’s mechanical workings and if anything needs to be looked at.

To integrate your iPhone (or iPod Touch. The app works on those too) into your wheelchair, a Bluetooth is required, but for many powerchair users, this is a moot issue as many already have one. And the app comes with a cradle so you can secure your device to your chair and not have to worry about it falling off, or anything like that.

I gotta say, if they keep coming out with cool apps for wheelchairs, I may even trade-in in my pre-paid Nokia for one of these bad boys. And if they come out with an app that’ll alert me whenever my foot falls off my footrest, I’m sold. For reals.

I still hate Apple products (a Mac was the bane of my existence in high school), but this is pretty awesome. I have no intention of switching to an iPhone, though. I cannot stand AT&T for many reasons, so I refuse to get a phone with one of their plans.

Hey Tiff, The on-chair charger pro'lly is a docking station that charges the phone on the chair's battery or when the chair's being charged so you can leave the iPhone on the chair at all times.

Very cool. Although I don't have a power chair that is great that they're including disabled users if the plethora of apps being offered.

IPhones are really cool! When my teenager daughter is asking me to buy her an Iphone I imediately googled the coolest IPhone that she wanted. Luckily, we have found one. We cannot deny the fact that Google is rapidly becoming the most powerful communication technology company, as they have just acquired Gizmo5. Gizmo5 is a VOIP service, or Voice Over IP (Internet Protocol – make phone calls over the internet) similar to Skype, and it's assumed Google will be reformatting Google Voice with Gizmo5 systems as it's new spine. Google also acquired AdMob, the mobile advertising company, and has the most successful smart phone operating system, with the Android OS. With the recent success of the Google Phones (G1 and so forth) and the Android OS, its likely Google didn't need a loan company to acquire Gizmo5, and is well on its way to becoming Skynet and unleashing Judgement Day and the Robot Apocalypse.

The company behind this (Dynamic Control) are a division of Invacare, and they supply wheelchair and scooter controllers to other manufacturers. So you may find that you can use this product with your existing chair. I can see that this could be useful for moving a chair around when you're not sitting in it, but outside, how could you use this without putting your iPhone on display? Sounds like an easy way of losing it.
