A recent headline out of Toronto - 'Wheelchair Killer’ fears prison payback - got me thinking about how hard (like, extra extra hard) it must be for wheelchair-users who end up in prison. But then I chide myself. They deserve it, right? What’s fair is fair. Afterall, I firmly believe people with disabilities shouldn’t get any type of special treatment, especially when it comes to judicial matters.

But, is it extra torturous and therefore a harsher punishment for a guy in a wheelchair vs. a guy who can walk (if let’s say they’re both serving identical terms)? I’m going to assume wheelchair-using inmates DO NOT get to interview/hire their own PCA’s on Craiglist. I’m also going to assume the guards don’t give them any kind of special protection. So, if you’re the guy from the article mentioned above (he tortured and killed a developmentally disabled young woman, pic seen above, with a blowtorch with the help of an accomplice. you can read the actual torture details here), this is probably karma coming back at him, to bite him in the numb/flat ass.

If you read the article, you’ll see the killer is worried that the other inmates will try to kill him the day he arrives, because in prison, there’s actually a pecking order when it comes to the evilness of everyone’s crimes (torture and molestation of kids, up to young women, are all looked at as the worst of the worse). He is pleading with the judge asking to be sent to an institution, not prison.

You know the more I continue writing this blog, the more this guy just pisses me off. Let him rot in prison, unable to walk or no. He should’ve thought of the dire consequences before killing that poor woman. Some people just piss me off.

Hi Tiffany, This guy is particularly heinous, and yes, he belongs in prison. . . It would be nice if people considered the consequences before committing a crime, but they don't -- one reason the death penalty doesn't deter crime. . . . You are right that wheelchair convicts do not get to select their own PCA, nor do the guards take care. For the wicked, like this guy, it probably is karma. Some people with disabilities belong in prison; others don't. . . . http://www.disaboom.com/Blogs/vicki/archive/2007/11/23/disability-in-u-s-prisons.aspx

Dosen`t Canada(parts of it anyway) allow the judicial system to find a person GUILTY,BUT NOT CRIMINALLY RESPONSIBLE , a provision to allow tratment for those with severe mental ilnesses? Seems this person`s claim to be guilty but not criminally responsible was judged to be too weak for him to fall under the protection of that.Borderline personality and depression aren`t usually severe enough to allow involuntary committment for psychiatric observation and treatment. I think a sizeable portion of our population may be suffering from depression, yet relativley few of them commit crimes of violence against other people. People who have been diagnosed as having borderline personalitites are rarely disruptive enough to come to the attention of the legal system, even though they often drive the people that know them to distraction. My overall impression of the Canadian legal system is that they are far more lenient than many of our states.I`m willing to trust their judgement on this case. ollie

i know of one disabled from a dui (her family died but she got lots of help) then 2 more people injured during a crime never saw a day on the street, got best of accessible housing -first! Never saw what so many people disabled by accident or work or disease live for years for their crime of not being 100% able. Cheap grace sucks raw eggs!

Canada and Mexico don't have a death penalty. That's why criminals flee to these countries. They won't extradite criminals if they may receive a death sentence either.
