I work for Atlantic Southeast Airlines and one of my jobs is to teach Airport Customer Service employees how to better serve passengers with disabilities. In the case of wheelchairs, that is someone's legs and their only means for getting around. Although there are NO excuses for damaging a passenger's assistive devices, thankfully there is no liability limit for damages. In other words, the airlines are liable for the FULL replacement value of any damage, regardless of the costs. Having read the articles on taking prosthetics on board and into the cabin, I can't vouch for international airlines but here in the U.S. an assistive device CAN be brought on the plane, as long as it can fit into the overhead storage compartment or under the seat in front. And, they are never counted as part of the passenger's baggage complement and are never assessed an excess bag fee. Also, because of the recent amendments to 14 CFR, Part 382, any country that a U.S. Air Carrier has scheduled landings into must abide by the SAME laws and regulations that govern U.S. disability laws. It is beyond comprehension why passengers with disabilities should have to put up with such shabby and uncaring treatment in this day and age! Well, in my little corner of the world, we are endeavoring to change that forever and move on. That's why I'm here: to answer questions, complaints, and let people with disabilities know that they have legal rights when flying.

Re: Write to the President's Disability Policy Team

I am concerned both for myself and for people with other mobility issues who hope to attend Inauguration.

For myself, I am concerned that although I have earned a ticket, I will not be admitted to Inauguration speech and the Inaugural Ball with my service dog. When I attended Barack's nomination in Denver, we had just come from the caucus, and I was attended by an fierce attorney who specializes in discrimination cases, and still it took over half an hour and they had to go up three levels in the supervisory chain before they let us go in. They asked, "what if he bites someone? "What if he urinates on the floor?"

Overzealous, uninformed, and VERY BUSY police and security guards can be most unwilling to consider, much less investigate on the spot that which they are unfamiliar. the security level will be high. They will have no time for "special cases."

It is because of actual experiences where people who should KNOW, have physically pushed out (the Social Security office!) and worse, that I fear that I might find myself waiting for an hour or not admitted at all.

California law expands on the ADA, and while I know the ADA covers me across the US, DC law is not as specific, and I hear that the police are not as well informed. I don't want the event to pass, or my able friends to have to wait for me, while I battle with security.

The things i am hearing about accommodation for those with disabilities is sounding very grim.

The Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies
"Access for people with Disabilities--No vehicular access, even with disability license plates or tags. People in wheelchairs or using walkers should know they will need to move across bumpy surfaces, grassy areas, and possibly icy spots."
