Saint Patrick's Day is coming up, and you know what that means, right? Green beer, pinching absent-minded coworkers who forget the holiday, and the kids bringing home dozens of shamrock-related crafts from school. If you're really adventurous, however, you could serve a few of these gross and bizarre green foods to the family or a few guests, for a feast worthy of St. Patrick himself. After all, he was probably pretty hungry after chasing all those snakes out of Ireland.

1. Green Bacon

Bacon: So good that even turning it bright green can't make it unappetizing. In this photo, Dave M. is applying food coloring directly to strips of raw bacon. Below, the results, along with the rest of Dave's Seuss-inspired culinary extravaganza:

2. Radioactive Neon Green Bread

Green Bread

Okay, so it's technically green Pandan bread, not radioactive bread, but I'm still pretty sure that I'd develop superpowers if I ate it. Maybe Dr. Manhattan ate too much neon blue bread? JY's Baking Journals actually include pictures of two different types of green bread, but this one is by far the most disturbingly bright.

Butter me a slice of that!

 3. Alarmingly Green Soup

Startlingly green soup.

No, Cliff Bostock didn't take this picture to show why he's suing his favorite lunch spot for serving him green soup-- it's supposed to be that way. It's made with cucumber, watercress, and mint, in a kale broth. Cliff, you're a braver man than I for eating this alarmingly green soup!

4. Green Mac and Cheese

Betcha a fiver that if there are children at your St. Paddy's Day celebration, even if they snub every other green dish, they'll eat Garal y Soka's green mac and cheese, which they originally made for Christmas dinner. It takes a lot more than a funny color to get kids to turn down some good macaroni and cheese!

5. Naturally Green Cheese

Basiron Pesto cheese

KRASK discovered Basiron Pesto 50+  in a neighborhood grocery store, and after purchasing it, discovered it's a pesto-flavored cheese that would be great on a grilled cheese sandwich with tomato. That is, if you can get to the moon (which has always been made of green cheese) to slice some off. I think I'll stick with cheddar...

6. Unpleasantly Green Oatmeal

This green oatmeal looks like a toxic chemical reaction infested with swollen Boll Weevils. Thankfully, Asoujournerssong provides recipes for several different and much more appetizing variations of the popular breakfast dish in the post where she shared this quirky green creation. Breakfast: The most important, and disgustingly emerald-colored, meal of the day.

7. Green Candied Popcorn

In case you need something to snack on while you watch your St. Patrick's day guests turning a little green themselves as they contemplate the menu, Cindylouh has kindly provided a recipe for green popcorn in her blog. Caution: This might be a yummy, if off-color, snack for movie night, but don't make it while watching Soylent Green!

Well, there you have it-- Seven green menu items, each perfect for a St. Patrick's Day party. But if that just isn't enough for you, we've got Even More Weird Green Foods!

Saydrah, You got it right when you said "weird" foods. Just looking at most of them made my belly feel yucky. But I would try the smoothie or the soup. The soup looks delicious. Sorry BeckyW. I just don't want my bread to glow!

I think I'll just stick to my corned beef and cabbage and new potatoes! Even my picky eaters like it. The green popcorn looked ok to me.....I'll pass on the rest thank you! Cute Blog!

True story: one of my older cousins mixes spinach into scrambled eggs. Her kids don't mind either spinach or eggs (good kids!), but they absolutely LOVE green scrambled eggs...
