Since its start, I've always looked forward to sharing exciting news with the Disaboom community. I've shared my engagement, my big move of last year, and my wedding. The advice, ideas, and support offered by members has made each of these event that much more special. Today I'm honored to share my family's newest journey: I'm pregnant!
You might (or might not!) have noticed that I've been exceptionally quiet the last few weeks-both on this blog and within the forums. This is unusual for me, but I'm pretty sure my excuse is a good one! Around 2 weeks ago, proud papa-to-be, Adam, and I found out that we're expecting. Technically, I found out and let him in on our little secret later that night. I'd been feeling extraordinarily tired, a little nauseous, and just not myself. While picking up groceries, I
grabbed the cheapest test I could fine-more in an effort to clear my mind so I could get some writing done! It should be noted that the dramatic 3-5 minute pause they show in the movies was no such reality for me. The minute I looked at the test, two bright red lines smiled back!

I was in a state of shock for the rest of the day and-needless to say-didn't get much writing done! I pondered some creative, artsy way to tell Adam. There are some wild ideas online, but none of them seemed to fit us. Even the most predictable life experiences have to be approached a little differently by us and there's never anything predictable about pregnancy or having a baby. I wanted him to feel comfortable experiencing the wide range of emotions I was so I told him privately after dinner-well...it was almost after dinner! I couldn't wait another second so I told him RIGHT in the midst of our chicken/pasta salad feast. He was ecstatic but didn't trust my frugal-focused evidence so he went to the store to pick up more tests-this time the digital version that says, "PREGNANT". A total of 4 tests later, we were convinced!

Since then, we've been sharing the news with family and friends. We've tried to tell as many people in person as possible. Most are happy. All are a bit shocked! Some I'm fairly sure would be less shocked if I told them aliens would be landing in about an hour. For the most part, it's been so much fun to share the excitement with everyone. We recognize that we're not the traditional family, but sometimes that's a good thing!
We've also come to recognize that there are a million-give or take a billion-resources out there for pregnant women but a sad few available for pregnant women with a disability. I find myself finding half answers to my questions and wondering, "But what about for me and my body?" In response (I often answer my own questions!), I hope that our journey might help or at least interest other people with disabilities and even the able-bodied world who'd like an accurate description of one family's approach. This blog won't become a full on "Mommy Blog". I'll still share my thoughts on other disability issues, but I'll also share what's on my mind most these days: pregnancy!
