If someone said I could sit in a machine and be able to move around on screen that would really be freaky since I've been disabled all my life. I would jump at the chance to try the game! Doesn't mean I'm not happy with my life that I have carved out for myself.. I'm an artist, love to cook an aunt love my family and friends I have a good life despite having to use a wheelchair.

You're a newscaster and you're this dense about political correctness???

If someone gave me a chance to drive a Ferrari 'round the track, I'd take it. Am I less of a man because I can't afford one of my own? If wanting to regain mobility is somehow an insult to the disabled, then why do we bother with prostheses for amputees? Hearing aids for the hard-of-hearing? Why do we bother with wheelchairs at all? Those who acquired their disability later in life especially are keen to get it back. They understand that their disability doesn't make them less of a man or woman, but that it limits what they can do, and they will work hard to overcome those limits.

Furthermore, having just watched the movie, I don't recall that particular scene as offensive -- largely because the character in question is portrayed as a dumb military man. At best, this is an insult to our honorable military!

Seriously, Mr. Raviv, your post shows that you did not give this issue much thought at all, and that you don't seem to understand much about movies or disabilities in general.

Re: "AVATAR" -- THE #1 MOVIE BUT WHAT's THE DISABILITY MESSAGE?

I gotta tell ya. I really am tired of the one way or the other, all or nothing approach taken by so many when issues like this one are discussed. I am not in the least bit concerned with or controlled by whatever the current politically correct "acceptable" position is when it comes to my spinal cord injury. My injury sucks.

Let me review. I am 51 years old and have spent way more than half of those years dragging 140 pounds of paralitic flesh around with about 40 pounds of muscle. I have a complete C7 injury that I am convinced will never be repaired. I don't think I have to go into the minutia of the thing for you to get the picture. That said: Life is good.

That's right. I am healthy, I have a good job, my wife has a nice butt and none of my kids are in jail. I work, play and have a great collection of Star Trek on DVD. Hell, I have a pool in m back yard. I am truly enjoying my life. But I am enjoying it not because of, or in spite of, but regardless of my disability. my spinal cord injury is not me.

So you see, I am no more insulted by the way this soldier is portrayed in "Avatar" than I am by the fact that there is an ongoing search to find a way to fix my severed cord. Does that mean I live shamed of who and what I am. Get real.I am not insulted by the recognition that I could have more fun in the body of an Avatar. I'd jump at it in a second. I saw the trailer. The blue chick is hot.

Re: "AVATAR" -- THE #1 MOVIE BUT WHAT's THE DISABILITY MESSAGE?

Dan, of course I can not answer for everyone and have not even taken the time to check with some of my wheelchair buds, (as in buddies), but as a part time chair user with PPS, who has a high probability of being 90-100 chair bound in the future I don't find the idea of the fact that Jake loves the ability to walk and run again via an avatar as offensive. I had several gamer friends that where also wheelchair bound and it was what they enjoyed about being a gamer .. in the game they weren't "different", they weren't chair bound, they were like every other player.

Isn't that why we watch TV, movies, plays, etc .. for the escapism factor, men who could easily just join the military will watch war movies .. and even picture/imaging themselves as the war hero .. is that offensive???? Or just escapism.

Not having seen the movie yet, but it is on my list to see, I can not make any comment on the 1st question on the "to get your legs back" as suggesting Jake will be a real man only if he's standing .. would have to see the whole scene to even guess on that. However of the disabled I know, most would be thrilled to have a chance to "have their legs back" .. I would ... doesn't mean I think I'm less of a person because I use a chair. I have watch people fight the good fight to get as much use back of their legs as they could including a yoga acquaintance here in Houston that has spent the last 5 years working at going from the "only able to shrug her shoulders" level quad, that she was released from the Hospital and rehab from, to now making 5-6 steps with a walker, using a power chair and driving a disability equipped van. No she may never walk without assistance but she can almost do all her transfers without assistance, which makes her so much more independent.

On the other hand I found it offensive that you felt that even someone who was fully adjusted to being disabled would not still enjoy thinking about being able to do things they cant.

I assume that you have never had the thought .. oh I would love to be a race car driver, or I would love to quit work and travel the world .. maybe you can't do those things but it doesn't mean you can't think/dream about them ... to rule that out for some one who is disabled is truly offensive.

Re: Disability News and Events – Nov. 22-28

1. A Stroke paralyzed the left side of my throat and altered my speech considerably to the point where I can by understood by some and not by others. The same is also true on the telephone only worse!

I was initially diagnosed with Multiple sclerosis but after I got rid of at least the outward signs of it (the vertigo, the double vision, and needing to walk with a cane, etc by using a product I had found on the Internet over in Europe). I was told 2-1/2 years after it had happened (during my sleep) that I had also had a Stroke. Much too late to reverse the effects of it.

And companies just do not like to hire an employee that not many can understand!

So, instead of applying for a multitude of things I can do, I finally resolved myself to working on setting up some web sites for my non computer minded wife, thinking that I could do most of the work, she could be earning the money and my Disabilty would not be affected. The first business (her idea) was a Bionic car starter but the times do not seem good for that due to the recession - especialy where I live with some 12% still unemployed). And I am working on a bunch of web sites some of which will be going 'Live' next week, while I am studying up on some other ones.

There is always a way to accomplish what you want.

Twitter Trackbacks for Disability News - Dec. 13-19 - Disaboom [disaboomlive.com] on Topsy.com

Pingback from Twitter Trackbacks for Disability News - Dec. 13-19 - Disaboom [disaboomlive.com] on Topsy.com

Re: Robotics Teams Prepare for Dec. 12 Tournament

Good luck and best wishes for the Courage Center teams.

Twitter Trackbacks for Disability News & Events, Nov. 29-Dec. 5 - Disaboom [disaboomlive.com] on Topsy.com

Pingback from Twitter Trackbacks for Disability News & Events, Nov. 29-Dec. 5 - Disaboom [disaboomlive.com] on Topsy.com

Re: Disability News & Events, Nov. 29-Dec. 5

Thx for the info!
