Thank you, Darren, for the encouraging post! I happened to be searching the site for other reasons when I came across your letter. I have just said goodbye to Dr. Rains, as he was here in our office over the last week working on the further promotion of our plans around accessible private yacht charters. As the number of accessible yacht charter inquiries increase, so does the awareness of the need for more UD inclusive yachts to be designed and built. Scott and I plan to visit another yacht builder, located in Florida, while we are attending this years SATH World Congress in early January. This company has already built a beautiful, fully accessible yacht for a private owner so, we hope to bring them into a select group of maritime professionals who wish to continue working toward the implementation of UD principles as they apply to the yacht and maritime designs. We will also be doing a site tour of one of the available accessible luxury yachts, Argyll, which will be in Florida during the same time. I can relate to this role all to well. I am usually the one to carry the stuff, but that's because someone else pushes my chair. That leaves me as the one with the free hands (sort of) LOL. i'm always all to eager to have a chance to help, since I have little opportunity otherwise. Hope whoever is in the wheelchair weighs enough to keep from tipping backwards when you hang coats, travel packs and bags off the back!

That's a great observation KaraSwims, and an important one. That even that less than ideal statement seems so groundbreaking to so many shows how much ground there still is to gain.

She didn't really make a promise to the community of people WITH disabilities...she made a promise (repeatedly in the statement) to their/our families. There is a difference. I think Palin's speech made it clear she's in "mom mode" and at best she'd be a paternalistic candidate for our needs.

John Hockenberry's book... *brain fart* Moving Violations is part of the title, talks about this. He was the only journalist in a wheelchair covering the Middle East conflict in a wheelchair and he said he felt more "normal" there than he did here in the States. When he needed help, he asked. (And he's pretty independent.) And received it. Whereas here in the States when he needed help it was like pulling teeth at times to get it.

I think some places, by their very nature (like Yellowstone) are difficult to make "fully accessible." (You can't pave over Norris Geyser basin.)

What one person is comfortable doing, another might not be, and yet a third might think is "too easy" to be worthwhile. So it's all in a person's point of view.

The gate idea, in this age of microchips and electronic toll etc. might not be so crazy. Maybe there's something embedded in your disabled license plate that triggers the gate. Though I suppose such technology would be prohibitive for the many modest businesses that have to provide disabled parking in their lots.
