I agree with you. College is rarely discussed by so-called professionals when it comes to students with disabilities. I remember my high school counselor rarely speaking to me about anything. The only reason I found out about voc rehab was because a friend of mine was a voc rehab counselor. I'm a quadriplegic paralyzed from the shoulders down and everybody assumed that college would be too much for me. Never mind the fact that I graduated in the top 5% of my class or that I was on the varsity academic decathlon team.
I currently run a youth group in which I work with youth with disabilities between the ages of 14 to 30. One of the things I stress to them is that nothing is impossible. The only thing that seems to be holding us back now is the recent budget cuts. As of March 15, here in the state of Arizona, voc rehab will no longer be taking on new cases.
Every month or so I attend transition fairs at local high schools. It worries me that the only people that attend those fairs are special-needs teachers and few parents. I think schools should make more of an effort to get general education school counselors to attend these events.

Re: It's an Asset?

“You can’t have a disability that needs to be accommodated in the classroom, and also have this special gift. "
I'm not clear about the "special gift" part of this debate; however, what appears to me (as one who suffers debilitating pain) is that of the 'two-sided coin". Surely, I do not see the gift of being paralyzed and confined to a wheel chair or bed for the remainder of one's life...yet so many wonders of the human spirit abound when you get the awareness of this "two-sided coin".

Re: NaBloPoMo

Have you checked out the Blogging365 group?
