The amount of hearing you have does not affect your ability to use and benefit from ASL - I am a case in point. I am hearing, and still can sign and understand sign. (True, I have a hearing accent, but it's my second language).

When a boy in her class was staring out of the window and not paying attention she went over to him and clapped her hands just behind his head. She says it was an extremely loud clap and it really made him jump. Next day his mother came in to the school saying that he had complained of ear pain and that she would sue the school and wanted Maria dismissed.

The upshot was that the Head backed her up and the boy suffered no long term hearing damage. However, she has learned her lesson too and has realised that a very loud handclap can actually cause temporaray hearing damage in a young child with sensitive ears.
